| |
| Exclusive Garments Ltd is a subsidiary company of MULLI BROTHERS LTD whose factory is situated in Chigumula area at Nantipwili on the Limbe/Thyolo M1 road. Garments manufacturing within the MULLI BROTHERS group of companies is a new undertaking in response to AGOA initiative under Exclusive Garments Limited. As part of value added productions MULLI BROTHERS LTD decided to respond favourably to the economic and trading call under the AGOA initiative. The company offers equal employment opportunities which is a great contribution to Malawi’s socio-economic development. There are over 500 young men and women doing different jobs in the garments production chain. The company has recruited expatriate staff from Philippines who are training local staff in various skills in the production of high quality garments destined for export market.

The initiative to open the garments factory is consistent with the government objective to move Malawi from a predominantly importing nation to a producing and exporting nation. It is our desire and belief that as trade grows, Africa prospers: thus optimizing benefits under AGOA. Consequently, the private sector involvement in the case of MULLI BROTHERS LTD has to take full advantage of AGOA initiative to develop and diversify trade, to promote the growth and competitiveness within Malawi and Africa, for the mutual benefit of all. |
The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) was signed into law on May 18, 2000 as Title 1 of The Trade and Development Act of 2000. The Act offers tangible incentives for African countries to continue their efforts to open their economies and build free markets.

Evidently, AGOA initiative has created 1.5 million jobs in several countries, allowing them to export goods worth US$448 million to US each year. Malawi has no reason to miss such n opportunity. AGOA’s purpose is to help spur prosperity and development in Sub-Saharan African countries and integrate the economies fully in the global economy by giving countries like Malawi greater access to the USA market. AGOA has facilitated new investment opportunities, created jobs for the deprived rural masses, and helped form commercial linkages that continue to foster new investment opportunities and increase prosperity in Malawi over the long term. |
| |
In this newly established business venture Malawi requires support from US because it is not self-reliant in garment manufacturing. The raw materials are imported making competition stiff for Malawi in the region especially where countries are capable of producing most of the raw material alone. Therefore, MULLI BROTHERS LTD would like to grow in the textile and apparel industry to export both quality and volumes that are in great demand in overseas markets like USA and Europe |
